Birthday Giving

Since my birthday is in the heart ❤️ of summer and usually HOT! Mom always made Rice Krispie treats instead of a cake. So, it’s a delightful memory and pleasure to share the same, along with some Peace Doves . The label on each reads: “Treating you in celebration of my birthday! Visit KindSpring.org for more kindness ideas.” Signed each personally with, “Love, Mindy” Planning on leaving the goodie birthday baskets at the library, Senior Center and laundromat. 10 Year Old Taylin's Act Of Generosity!

his post is a little long so please bear with me. So this year February, my daughter Taylin asked me if she could celebrate her 10th birthday with a few friends somewhere they could zip line. I agreed and said I'll make the arrangements. So I dragged my feet and meant to start phoning around by the end of March, but then Covid happened. I suggested we wait and see what happens. Whilst waiting I realized that her idea might not materialize. I came up with plan B and asked if we should rather just make her a theme cake, we all dress up and just keep it simple,  he agreed. While planning the theme cake and having to submit our final draft, Taylin changes her mind on 14 June 2020. She says "leave the cake and gifts and let me take the money an

Duh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh-nuh- Batman

y new birthday tradition rocked today. I started it a couple of years ago. It goes like this: I put the same number of one-dollar bills as my new age, into my pocket and surprise strangers around town (I know, $24 isn’t much (that's my attempt at humor, my daughter is nearly that old). I gifted strangers at local coffee shops including McDonald's, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Blenders, Kyle's Kitchen, Yogurtland, as well as tipping some of the folks behind the counter. Reactions were wonderful as I explained, "It's my birthday and paying for this is your gift to me." I plop down the money and leave. Recipients (and even people working at the establishments) are stunned and excited. I love that people will tell the story of the myster

❤️🐶 Mulligan’s Birthday

y neighbor-friend in the burn unit messaged me this from the hospital last night: “So it’s almost 9 o’clock at night and I’m thinking that you’re probably asleep. I hope you have a good evening. I wanted you to know that tomorrow is Mulligan‘s birthday. He’ll be nine years old and I won’t be able to spend the day with him, so please make it a special day for him. Thank you, have a good day.” I was so deeply moved, that with all she’s going through, she sent this 🙏. My eyes filled. I suggested a FaceTime session with Mulligan ( her Siberian Huskie) , if her device allows, so they can see each other & she can wish him a happy birthday & tell him she loves him. ❤️🐶 I shared about it with an

Sharing Birthday Love

y sister is on the other side of the world.  I'm volunteerting in India while she's at home in Canada. While I can't be there physically to celebrate her birthday, I wanted to spread some love to mark the day. I set off to the market to get ingredients for cookies when I saw an old man carrying a long rod with a weight on one end and a large tray holding food which he was selling on the other hand.  Perfect! I went up to the man and took the rod off his shoulder and walked with him for the next half kilometer, talking to him and his grandson who appeared after a few minutes.  The grandfather and boy are the only regular income generators in the family.  The boy and granddad go out after the boy gets back from school.  After walking and talking to the wonderful pair, as I l

A Big Gift From My Grandma

y 16th birthday is in 18 days. I went to have brunch today with my grandma and she handed me an envelope and wished me a "happy early birthday". I didn't open the envelope until I got home and discovered a hundred dollar bill in it! I was in complete shock. Suddenly, feeling a wave of awe, I started tearing. As a retiree with no income and little retirement funds, my grandma barely has enough to pay her own rent and feed herself.   I wondered why she would do this; I would've never asked for anything for my birthday but for her love. My mom tells me that because she gave me the gift because she loves me and wanted me to buy something for myself to remember my 16th birthday. Although I'm supposed to buy something for myself, I plan to s

Angel Cards For My Sister

t was recently my sister's birthday and I wanted to make her a pack of homemade "Angel Cards". I painted a picture on one side of some small blank business cards. On the other side I wrote words of encouragement. I made her a pack of 29 cards, as it was her 29th birthday. She lives far away from me and as I was about to post them, I got an idea. I decided that each day, I would post one of the cards to her. That way, she would receive one Angel card each day. So far I have sent 15 of the 29 cards. At first she thought I had just sent her one card, because I didn't tell her what I was doing. Then she started getting more and more cards - one each day. She does not know how many are coming. But when I send the last one, I will let her know what has happened. Just

30 Acts In 30 Days For My 30th Birthday

s some of you know, my 30th birthday party is coming up and I have themed it a 'Random Acts of Kindness' party where we will be doing various things to bestow kindness upon others. My best friend, who cannot attend because she lives in South Africa (I'm in Australia) has chosen to participate in the event anyway.  She has given me the best present possible!  I felt so good when I received her email.  Not just because of the beautiful comments she made, but also to see that my random acts of kindness idea has even reached the other side of the world and will make a difference to people so far away. It's absolutely inspirational. Here is her beautiful email that I would love to share with you: To my dear friend, Jackie, Since we met in July 2003, you have been a wo

A Birthday Cake To Remember

nbsp;  This story is not about something that I've done for someone else, but about something really nice that someone did for me.    On Monday, I had a monumental birthday, you know the kind where you look in the mirror and realize that you've gone over the hill and you are starting to walk a slow walk down the other side.  Well, anyway, I was sitting at my desk on Monday, when I heard the door of the office open and there stood everyone from the office with a big cake and singing happy birthday.  The best part is, that a very special person made the cake.  Knowing that I'm a big fan of peppermint patties, she made a chocolate cake with peppermint ice cream in the center and decorated it with more peppermint patties.  It was the best cake

A Lone Visitor For An Old Lady's 92nd Birthday

once helped an old lady home with her shopping. We talked a little and I learned that she had spent her life working for the Salvation Army. Well, it was her 92nd birthday (this time last year) and I decided to take her some flowers. I barely knew her but I thought it would be a nice gesture.   I told my brother-in-law what I was going to do and he found it very funny. He said I was “sooo gullible”.    Well, I did it anyway. I went over to Mrs Thompson’s with some flowers.    Mrs Thompson is a widow. She lives in a bungalow, it’s nice, although it looks like it hasn't been decorated since the 1960s. She's a wee woman. She was wearing at least two cardigans and her spindly legs disappeared into fur line

A Neighborhood Party With A Special Surprise

We had a great neighbourhood party this weekend. We all gathered on someone’s driveway and everyone brought one dish. It was an international food theme so we had lots of interesting treats. Our neighbour Margaret is 97 years old and it was her birthday soon. I thought it would be fun to celebrate her birthday at the same time so I baked a big cake and lots of brownies. I took it over to the party driveway along with some construction paper and colored markers. I had bought it for the kids, so that they could make her birthday cards. When Margaret came over in her motorised scooter we yelled “SURPRISE!” and sang her “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”. We all gave her big hugs and the kids surrounded her and proudly gave her the cards that they had

A Little Girl With A Big Heart

barely make ends meet.  This girl is very bright and gifted at music and that's how she got the scholarship from this school.  The stipend also includes an allowance for things like lunch, school uniform and music lessons.    The daughter became friends with this girl and would secretly talk to her at lunch (secretly, in order to avoid the other kids teasing her).  On her birthday last month, she invited her new friend to her birthday party.  The girl said she couldn't come.  The daughter really wanted her to come and persisted in asking her.  Eventually the girl said, "I don't have any nice clothes that I could wear to your birthday party."  After a short pause, the girl remembered, "I have this top f

A Birthday Lunch With An Extra Smile

down at our table, I noticed an elderly couple having lunch at a table across the room.  I must have looked over at them a few times because my son asked me if I knew them.  I replied that I didn’t, but that they reminded me of my own grandparents.  When the waitress came over, I asked her if she knew them.  She said she did.  She said it was the elderly man’s birthday today.  I wanted to do something for them so I told the waitress that I wanted to pay for their lunch and gave her some money.  Sometime later, the elderly couple came over to thank us.  They were so excited that someone had bought them lunch and wanted to meet my son and I.  They said that they had been a little sad because their own son and daughter seemed

My Nephew's Birthday Adventure In Paying It Forward

want to say thanks to all of you for your special notes and ideas, after I sent my request for 'gifting acts of kindness ideas' for my nephew's birthday last month. I was excited to hear from some of you with suggestions. Pancho suggested that I give him my attention -- as the greatest gift one human being can give another -- yes! Nipun helped out by sharing his own story, and got me thinking further about how I could do a kindness tag, Idaho style. I gave that kid some super-duper hugs, not to mention every bit of attention I could muster, and a good dose of kindness stories, to boot. There is a long story with great sidenotes that goes with the birthday adventure story, but the short story is as follows: I gave my nephew twenty bucks for his

A Gift-It-Forward Birthday Present

recently went to a meditation session.  At the end of the visit our host told us the following Monday was his birthday. He asked if, as a gift to him, we would do something kind for someone else on that day.  I thought that was an awesome birthday idea!  The following Monday, I saw my neighbor, a new mother, in the yard with her baby. I went outside to say 'hello'.  In the course of the conversation, she told me, not in a complaining way but just as a matter of circumstance, about the sleeplessness and the challenges to get anything done with a baby in tow.  I remembered my meditation host's request and said, "Hey! Why don't I watch your baby for an hour. I'll just hang out with him here in the back yard and you go in and take an ho

A Little Help For A 5 Year Old

went on to this web site that I am part of where everyone tries to help each other.  There  was a special request made for a five-year-old year old on her birthday.  The request was for a dress, a birthday card and some bows. I made contact with the mom, got her information and mailed out a box to the little girl. I sent a dress, bows, and a birthday card with $2.00 in the card for her. Her mom was happy. I just got the email from her and it bought a smile to my face knowing that she appreciated it.  It said: "Thank you so so so much for the card and the bows and the shirt! Savana loved them! You are a blessing! I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you again!" Her statement made me smile. And, I am glad that she got h

Just 1 Card To Say Happy Birthday...

have a Aunt who is deaf and lives alone. To communicate with her when we visit we write in her notebook. Her birthday is in March. Last year she was 96 years old. I thought about things I could get her but aside from food there isn't much she needs. So, I decided to I send emails out to a few friends. I told everyone  about my Aunt and asked them if they could please take a few minutes and help celebrate her birthday by sending a card to her.  Little did I know how this one request would impact so many, especially my Aunt! My friends asked their own friends to join in. The cards started arriving every day for a month!! My Aunt was so excited! She couldn't believe so many people were thinking about her.  She recieved over 50 cards! Something so little, that

A Bead And The Kindness Of Strangers

My daughter is a teller at a bank.  She saw that one of her clients was wearing a charm bracelet made by "Pandora."  I had been wanting one of them for my birthday.  My husband just bought me one last week so I got my present early.  My daughter mentioned to the customer how pretty her three braclets were and that I had just got one as an early birthday present.  The customer asked when my birthday was and my daughter told her.  The woman, according to my daughter, replied, "Oh, my birthday is on the 20th" and then she opened her braclet and took off a beautiful charm and gave it to my daughter to give to me as a gift!  The reason I wanted one of these braclets is so that as my friends and family b

Reverse Birthday Gift

Today I was blessed to turn forty-five years young.  I enjoy reading all of the awesome ideas from this wonderful site about people giving on their birthday, so, I decided this would be my chance to experience the joy of giving on my special day.   My husband took me to the Olive Garden, and our waitress was very nice. We had a great dinner experience and then I tried a warm apple crostata that was scrumptious. Then the waitress, Carlini, brought our bill.    When she came back to the table to get our credit card I knew it was my time to give. I sat the gift bag on the edge of the table and simply said, "In honor of my birthday, I want to bless you with a gift."   Ohh, the shock on her face! She said,

A Sub Birthday Surprise

who had asked her for money. In her opinion those people needed to get jobs.    We were feeling a little uncomfortable with the situation and I was wondering what I should say to my kids later, especially my fifteen year old daughter. I always tell her we have to be the change we want to see. I was sort of mulling it over in my head when I heard the lady say, "It's also my birthday, and no one could be bothered to spend it with me."  I knew this was my chance, both to help her change her thinking and to help her feel cared for on her birthday. I asked the clerk for help, telling her I wanted to pay for the lady and asking if she was getting just a sub or a meal.   The cashier was amazing! She went over and casually asked, "Wil

Soccer Team's Gift

oday, my family was given the opportunity to do an act of kindness. My son's soccer team was invited to a home for children with complex physical disabilities to help celebrate the 14th birthday of one of the residents. This boy is from Burundi, Africa where soccer is very popular. All the children got wheeled out to the back yard and my son's team played an exhibition game for them to watch. The team gave the birthday boy a team jersey and a birthday card signed by all the players. We all got to meet the boy's family and have a tour of the home. It was a gift for everyone involved - the birthday boy and his family, the soccer team, my son, my husband and I. I left there with such a feeling of warmth and love and pride in our boys. That feel

My Best Birthday Ever

fter being inspired by a video of a young Pakistani man celebrating his 22nd birthday with 22 random acts of kindness, I mentioned to my girlfriend Tamara that I'd like to do the same for my upcoming 55th birthday in December. Well, she grabbed onto the idea and made it happen. We wore goofy reindeer antlers to make people smile, placed cheery stickers on the shirts of children, cleaned up a park, passed out delicious Mexican hot chocolate to those in the park--many of whom appeared homeless, offered bottled water and compassionate listening in the shopping mall, played rock/scissors/papers with a bored 10 year old boy who was waiting for his sisters to finish shopping, and more. The highlight for me occurred at the end of the day when

What I Learned From My 60 Deliberate Acts In 60

or my 60th birthday, I challenged myself to do 60 very deliberate acts of kindness for 60 consecutive days and write about my experiences each day. Now I am no stranger to going out and doing things, but this is the first time I have ever been focused and paid attention to 'Kindness Acts' to the degree that was required in coming up with what I was going to do each day, preparing for it when I needed to, and then writing about it for 60 days Here is what I want to share. In my experience, there is no such thing as a 'kindness act' There is no separate 'act' that can be called Kindness. I believe our true nature IS kindness and that when we are not acting out of fear( which is what manifests as self interest, greed, material competition, and not- enoughn

More Than A Munchie Box For Her Birthday

sitting on the bus and the guy behind us was on the phone. After a "business" call he phoned his sweetheart. He explained that some money he was due wouldn't be paid in one lump but that they would get it even if they had to wait a while longer. It didn't sound hopeful. She must have asked what he wanted for dinner and he replied that the last thing he wanted her doing on her birthday was cooking. I got the impression her birthday had been a poor affair. I don't know if he'd got her a gift but her not cooking seemed important to him, as if it as all he had to give. So he suggested he picked up a take-away and said he knew a place that did a "munchie box" for a very reasonable price. For "reasonable" I heard "cheap."

esterday morning, I presented Marionne, a close friend of mine, with a chocolate cake on her birthday. I had also sent her a birthday message through an e-card. Later in the morning, I went to her office and gave her a big hug. To my joy and surprise, I got three beautiful thank you e-cards from her, making me feel as if it were my birthday! I was so happy! When you give without expecting anything in return, other than the pure joy of giving and sharing a special moment, you get back more than you can imagine! Keep giving and feel the joy of living!

Every year on her birthday she visits an orphanage  and gifts the little ones with some toys, some eatables, or sometimes what they really are in need of. Life-Changing Birthday Gifts

oday I was at the regional non-profit  blood center donating Source Plasma. My seat mate Tony was a lovely gentleman there for his 15 gallon milestone. Rather than hold a 65th birthday party he has invited his extended family to donate blood and blood based products including platelets, plasma, bone marrow, and source plasma in his honor. Over the course of this his "birthday week" 35 of his closest buds will be sharing the Gift of Life. What a life-changing birthday gift these people are giving! I signed my hubby up for an honorary Platelets donation on Tuesday, his first one, in Tony's honor. Every donation helps . In so many ways, these acts of kindness work to pay life forward for those in crisis. What would happen if we all did someth

Smile Card Birthday “tweets!” ...

mile card birthday “tweets!” Not the Twitter kind or even the bird kind, but the celebrating birthday KIND :))))). Labeled each treat with a short message, plus taped a SMILE card on the back — enough to commemorate every year I’ve been alive (well, at least in this life!). That’s a LOT of treats to tweet 🕊 ❤️!!! I’ve been giving them out the last few days, leading up to my birthday: a basketful at the library, bank tellers, family around the campfire, to Greg - our mailman, Bryce - our UPS delivery man, and still have a goodly amount left to share with fellow participants on the Garden Walk and whomever paths intersect with mine today. * Setting a few aside, for when more balloons land in our meadow ð
