A Sub Birthday Surprise
who had asked her for money. In her opinion those people needed to get jobs. We were feeling a little uncomfortable with the situation and I was wondering what I should say to my kids later, especially my fifteen year old daughter. I always tell her we have to be the change we want to see. I was sort of mulling it over in my head when I heard the lady say, "It's also my birthday, and no one could be bothered to spend it with me." I knew this was my chance, both to help her change her thinking and to help her feel cared for on her birthday. I asked the clerk for help, telling her I wanted to pay for the lady and asking if she was getting just a sub or a meal. The cashier was amazing! She went over and casually asked, "Wil

Soccer Team's Gift
oday, my family was given the opportunity to do an act of kindness. My son's soccer team was invited to a home for children with complex physical disabilities to help celebrate the 14th birthday of one of the residents. This boy is from Burundi, Africa where soccer is very popular. All the children got wheeled out to the back yard and my son's team played an exhibition game for them to watch. The team gave the birthday boy a team jersey and a birthday card signed by all the players. We all got to meet the boy's family and have a tour of the home. It was a gift for everyone involved - the birthday boy and his family, the soccer team, my son, my husband and I. I left there with such a feeling of warmth and love and pride in our boys. That feel

My Best Birthday Ever
fter being inspired by a video of a young Pakistani man celebrating his 22nd birthday with 22 random acts of kindness, I mentioned to my girlfriend Tamara that I'd like to do the same for my upcoming 55th birthday in December. Well, she grabbed onto the idea and made it happen. We wore goofy reindeer antlers to make people smile, placed cheery stickers on the shirts of children, cleaned up a park, passed out delicious Mexican hot chocolate to those in the park--many of whom appeared homeless, offered bottled water and compassionate listening in the shopping mall, played rock/scissors/papers with a bored 10 year old boy who was waiting for his sisters to finish shopping, and more. The highlight for me occurred at the end of the day when

What I Learned From My 60 Deliberate Acts In 60
or my 60th birthday, I challenged myself to do 60 very deliberate acts of kindness for 60 consecutive days and write about my experiences each day. Now I am no stranger to going out and doing things, but this is the first time I have ever been focused and paid attention to 'Kindness Acts' to the degree that was required in coming up with what I was going to do each day, preparing for it when I needed to, and then writing about it for 60 days Here is what I want to share. In my experience, there is no such thing as a 'kindness act' There is no separate 'act' that can be called Kindness. I believe our true nature IS kindness and that when we are not acting out of fear( which is what manifests as self interest, greed, material competition, and not- enoughn

More Than A Munchie Box For Her Birthday
sitting on the bus and the guy behind us was on the phone. After a "business" call he phoned his sweetheart. He explained that some money he was due wouldn't be paid in one lump but that they would get it even if they had to wait a while longer. It didn't sound hopeful. She must have asked what he wanted for dinner and he replied that the last thing he wanted her doing on her birthday was cooking. I got the impression her birthday had been a poor affair. I don't know if he'd got her a gift but her not cooking seemed important to him, as if it as all he had to give. So he suggested he picked up a take-away and said he knew a place that did a "munchie box" for a very reasonable price. For "reasonable" I heard "cheap."

A Birthday Moment
esterday morning, I presented Marionne, a close friend of mine, with a chocolate cake on her birthday. I had also sent her a birthday message through an e-card. Later in the morning, I went to her office and gave her a big hug. To my joy and surprise, I got three beautiful thank you e-cards from her, making me feel as if it were my birthday! I was so happy! When you give without expecting anything in return, other than the pure joy of giving and sharing a special moment, you get back more than you can imagine! Keep giving and feel the joy of living!

The Special Way She Celebrates Her Birthday Had Her
love my very close best friend who is very generous, kind, loving, caring, and helpful. She is always helping out people in need. Her profession is a lawyer, but she is very kind at heart and very humble as a person. Every year on her birthday she visits an orphanage and gifts the little ones with some toys, some eatables, or sometimes what they really are in need of. This birthday she made a promise to share her kindness act with her friends in their circle meeting. Her friends all decided to celebrate their birthdays in the orphanage and gift the children with various snacks! So now, on every members birthday, they come together to spread joy and love to those children who really want someone to love them. There are almost 380 childr

Life-Changing Birthday Gifts
oday I was at the regional non-profit blood center donating Source Plasma. My seat mate Tony was a lovely gentleman there for his 15 gallon milestone. Rather than hold a 65th birthday party he has invited his extended family to donate blood and blood based products including platelets, plasma, bone marrow, and source plasma in his honor. Over the course of this his "birthday week" 35 of his closest buds will be sharing the Gift of Life. What a life-changing birthday gift these people are giving! I signed my hubby up for an honorary Platelets donation on Tuesday, his first one, in Tony's honor. Every donation helps . In so many ways, these acts of kindness work to pay life forward for those in crisis. What would happen if we all did someth

hope you’re having a beautiful day. ♡ Here’s another light-filled ¤ Gem ¤ "This past Saturday my wife, Rebecca, was taking my son Jonah and a few friends put-put golfing for his birthday party. On the way there he saw a man with a sign asking for help. Jonah, feeling concerned for the man, immediately asked Rebecca to do something. She could read between the lines that it didn’t feel right to him that he’d be off celebrating with his friends while this man seemed unsupported…” -Ariel Nessel. Smile Card Birthday “tweets!†...
mile card birthday “tweets!” Not the Twitter kind or even the bird kind, but the celebrating birthday KIND :))))). Labeled each treat with a short message, plus taped a SMILE card on the back — enough to commemorate every year I’ve been alive (well, at least in this life!). That’s a LOT of treats to tweet 🕊 â¤ï¸!!! I’ve been giving them out the last few days, leading up to my birthday: a basketful at the library, bank tellers, family around the campfire, to Greg - our mailman, Bryce - our UPS delivery man, and still have a goodly amount left to share with fellow participants on the Garden Walk and whomever paths intersect with mine today. * Setting a few aside, for when more balloons land in our meadow ð

Birthday Kindness To Me And Spread To Others
y birthday was Thursday 10/8. I took off 5 days from work. I treated myself to breakfast. When I got there to pick it up the man asked "what are you doing today?" I said "well, it's my birthday." He said "oh nice, if you show me ID of your dob, you get a birthday discount." I showed it and my bill went from $14 to $5. I did give him a $5 tip. (kind of gave away my savings, but I was ok with it) Then I went to buy something at Walgreens. It was $10. She said you have $5 store credit. Well giddy up to me again. I left and on street corner at light was an old man asking for money. I had never seen him before. I handed him a $5. Same thing, I gave away my saving. However, I see it as it meant to be. And it made me happy! &nb

When I Turned 50 ...
hen I turned 50 I asked people to donate to Charity: Water in lieu of gifts for my birthday. Last year, for my 51st, I travelled around town and surprised people buying items for them using 51 one-dollar bills. I told myself that when I turned 52 I would use a deck of 52 cards, set up a card table downtown, and do card tricks for people walking by, but then COVID hit and has stayed with us up to my 52nd. I wanted to do something for someone today, but was unsure what I could do. We reconfigured our garage a few days ago and were able to clear a bookshelf which I put on Craigslist for a few bucks. A young woman said she wanted it, but I'd have to drive it to her place, and with the holidays being so busy, I wasn't willing to make the delivery, especially for

Honor My Son's Special Birthday
n August 7, my son's birthday, I gave Happy Birthday Quote cards, Quote cards, chocolates, cookies, groceries, school uniforms, Textbooks, notebooks, pencils, backpacks, Mathematical compasses, T-shirts, and little donations to needy people. For this milestone birthday, I wanted to do something extra special but didn't know what to do. While giving the above-mentioned things in the morning, the mom of one student requested that I buy a bicycle for her son who has to walk a long way to school. We went together and bought one. It is used but with new tires and in very good condition. He loved it I thank Sri Sathya Sai Baba for giving me this special opportunity and for helping and guiding me. The image is from the internet, not of the actual bicycle.

Again Kindness Travels With Me
gain Kindness Travels With Me I always try to be helpful to others. I do admire and try my level best to follow Albert Einstein's quote "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile." To follow my goal I use positive stories, quote cards and Birthday cards etc.. The night before I left for CA was rainy. There were 30% chances of rain, but I expected the clear weather on the day of my travel - June 19, 2025, from Chicago to Irvine CA. Positivity found its way, giving me a beautiful morning to scatter positivity and kindness during the day. I am grateful to my son for booking my ticket, checking in online, and giving me the ride to the airport. He pre-checked luggage bag and talked to the check in lady at the drop bag counter. He told her about my hearing p

A Loaf Of Bread
hen I decided to be a part of the smile card experiment, the first person that came to mind to target was Lara, a fellow member of my research group and a mentor. I couldn't think of the perfect thing for her yet and on top of that found out that it was her birthday 2 months back. The next day, at a local deli, inspiration struck when I saw their freshly baked honey wheat bread. I picked up a loaf and headed to lab. Unfortunately or fortunately, Lara wasn't in her office, so I put a note on the loaf reading: Lara, Happy Belated Birthday! I really like this honey wheat bread and thought you would enjoy! An hour later, she comes by and I innocently tell her someone left a package for her. She reads the note and immediately looks at me, "Did you leave this?" I try my

Lifting The Spirit Of A Teen Saddened By Death
note to her granddaughter to let her know how special she was and how proud she was of her. It wasn't always a gift - sometimes it was just a note to let her know she was thinking of her. The grandmother would also pick up her granddaughter and take her on special outings - just the two of them - going out for the day and doing things together. I had also found out that this young girl had a birthday coming up. I don't live in the same state, so after I heard of this young girl's sadness in missing her grandmother and of her birthday, I decided to create a little care package for her. I picked up a book a teen would enjoy, a bookmark, a card and wrote a note inside to wish her a special birthday and enclosed some money so that she could buy herself somethi

Pay-It-Forward Birthday Wishes
t was a good friend's birthday the other week and I wasn't going to be able to wish him in person. I decided to pay-it-forward in honour of his birthday and started searching through the internet for ideas. I came across a wonderful concept on the Give Foundation's site, whereby you can gift a donation for a particular item/cause in honor of a friend -- just what I was looking for. They had lots of wonderful causes to support and I decided to support two causes with the theme of empowerment in mind. Through one NGO, you could support the purchasing of books to create a rural library and the other NGO purchased a wheelchair for someone in need. It is such a wonderful feeling to pay-it-forward to honour people's birthday

Nanny's Birthday Lunch
ast weekend, a few of us drove to Oklahoma to see my husband's mother, who is now in a nursing home. We wanted to take her out to lunch to celebrate her 88th birthday. We decided to go to an all you can eat buffet. Now when I said there was a few of us, I should have mentioned 10 people in all. When you have over 50 members in your family, 10 is a few to us but not to the waitress at the buffet. The waitress began clearing off a couple of tables and moved the tables together. Then she started running around the room to gather up enough chairs so we were all able to sit together. It was on a Sunday, and the peak time for lunch. The place was packed. You had to get a clean plate for salad, entries and desert. I

Birthday Celebrations
had my 25th birthday last week. I am tired of drunken debaucheries :) so 8 of us got together and decided to do something nice for the people who pick up the phone when we call the college shuttle. It is because of them that we are able to go from one place to another in this freezing cold. We made posters saying - "Thank you for all you do", "Your help is appreciated!" and others. We bought coffee, cakes, cookies, and chocolates and decided to take it to the shutte headquarters. It was a blast -- haven't seen sooo many unexpected smiles in a looooonggggg time! It was indeed the best birthday ever :-)

My Nurse's Special Birthday Gift
ast month it was my nurse's birthday. She has been caring for me since August 2006. Through the months, we have built an amazing bond. She has been there for me, and has helped me over so many hurdles its unbelievable. She's my rock in every way. I wanted to do something special for her birthday, to show her how much she means to me. Being confined to my bed, I can't go out shopping for a gift. So I was left to use my imagination and the materials in my room. But I was determined to make an unforgettable gift. I found an old shoe box, and got a bunch of my old girlie magazines, and spent 4 days cutting and pasting carefully selected items onto the box, creating an intricate collage. Each piece reflected in some way or another, our friendship. To finish it off, I put a

21 Ways To Celebrate Life
After Nancy Rothstein's son, Josh, passed away unexpectedly, she was seeking a way to offer a tribute for family and friends to honor his birthday. With each passing birthday, she adds one more item to the list. Last April 16 would've been Josh's 21st birthday, and true to her tradition, Nancy shared these 21 ways to celebrate life: Smile. Smiling makes you and those around you feel good. If you don’t feel good, a smile can trick your brain into feeling better. Eat ice cream. Run on the beach. If you can’t physically do this, use your imagination. Call someone who is ill or lonely. Listen to their story. Take the time. Tell them your story, if they ask. Listen to music

My Daughter's 19th Birthday With A Twist
or my daughter's 19th birthday in December, we bought her tickets to go and see Linkin Park, as they were playing in our city in the UK. We didn't really have the money but we knew how much this band meant to her, and she'd seen them years earlier with her Dad. The night before she was like a kid at Christmas, all pink cheeked, shiny eyed and giddy with aniticipation. Every so often she got up and came to sit with us, because she couldn't sleep. On the night of the concert it was good to see her so happy and excited, as she and her boyfriend set off. Needless to say when they returned after midnight , with t-shirts, a programme and lots of video and pictures of the band, listening to her gushing about how fantastic they had been, we knew that the m

Learning Generosity At A Young Age
nbsp; On about her 7th or 8th birthday, my daughter said that she wanted to have her friends do a scavenger hunt/food collection as part of her birthday party. She wanted to give the food to a food pantry to feed homeless and hungry people. So, during the party the little girls went out in our neighborhood on their mission and came back with bags and bags of food that we took to our local food pantry. I remember being so proud of her for being generous, kind and caring. Fast forward to now. My daughter recently turned 21. She is a college student attending university in Tennessee. After church each Sunday she and her boyfriend volunteer with their church to provide meals for homeless people in a park near the church. Recently they also start

Loving Kindness Is Twice Blessed
felt gloomy the other day. The weather had been dark and rainy, and I just didn’t feel so positive. It happens to us all, I guess. As I was sitting at my desk, I remembered it was the birthday of a dear long-time friend—a single, middle-aged woman who has dedicated the past 30 years to nursing and loves her work. Knowing that she doesn’t have family in town, I decided to give her a call. Sure enough, she was scheduled to work late into the evening, and wouldn’t have much of a birthday this year. As always, though, she sounded cheerful and was happy I called. After I hung up, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she would really appreciate a little attention on her special day. Still feeling a little gloomy myself, I tried to put it out of my mi

Flowers For A Stranger In The Hospital
nbsp; On my birthday this year, I decided to do something very different. I decided to do something for someone. I have been blessed with so much and I wanted to reach out and be a blessing to someone. So, that afternoon, I went to my local grocery store, bought a bouquet of flowers and went down the street to the new hospital. I had no idea who I was going to present the flowers to, but I would find someone who needed to be cheered up. I went up to the 4th floor, asked the nurses at the station, who thought it odd that I didn't have anyone in particular that I was there to see. Still, they gave me the room number of an elderly lady who they said, "could use some cheering up." I proceeded to the

Photos Lead To Birthday Sharing
in a picture with his wife. So we got our picture taken with her. A little time later we saw the couple again, this time we were with our family. I ran up and offered to take their picture. They looked at us and saw our family. The husband said, " Would you like to share a cake and some drink with my wife and I?" We said "Yes," and they came back with a huge birthday cake. It turned out they were from Bangladesh and the woman could speak limited English and had no family with whom to share her birthday. It turned out one small act of kidness returned another act.
