Slum School Birthday

My daughter asked her friends not to bring any gifts to her eighth birthday party. Instead, she asked them for a voluntary donation to help a slum school.   All her friends and their parents contributed generously, putting their donations into the charity box she made. In all, USD 200 was collected and we topped it up to USD260.    In addition, we bought stationery items and cup cakes and celebrated the birthdays of my daughter and son (their birthdays are just two days apart) with the children of Gulshan literacy program (GLP) school, Badda, Dhaka.    It was a great party sharing our joys with those children. I was overwhelmed and so proud of my kids.   The GLP school kids presented beautiful h

Visiting My Ex

I visited my ex-wife today.  She is wheelchair bound.    We split up years ago and there were some bitter and difficult times along the say. But it as her birthday recently, so took her a birthday cake, some flowers and perfume. She was genuinely happy.    I always find it a humbling experience when I am with her. She bears up so well and inspires me every day. Whenever I think I have something to worry about she comes into my mind and I realize that I have choices I can make while she doesn't have any real choices except to keep going.    I was feeling so low today but this was the best thing I could have done.    When I got home she called me to thank me. It all made the world seem a bett

Drying Birthday Tears

When I went in to work I heard that a co-worker of mine had been crying. When I asked why they said it was her birthday and nobody did anything special for her - not even her mom!    So, I asked her what her favorite kind of cake was and she said confetti cake.    Tonight, when I got home from work, I made a special confetti cake to take in for her. It will be so nice to see her smile!

Can I Have Kindness For My Birthday?

This year, instead of birthday presents, dinners, etc, my husband and I decided to pool our resources and request acts of kindness, compassion and generosity be done on our behalf.  We aimed for one kind deed for each year of our lives. I'm turning 42 and he's turning 41 this month so that adds up to 83 acts of kindness!     We sent out an email today requesting this gift, and posted it on Facebook. So far the response has been fantastic!     We've asked people to share what they did so we can inspire others with the stories. My favorite so far involves my girlfriend's 12 year old daughter who got so inspired that she's currently brainstorming things she can do to be kind and generous.

100 Acts Of First Grade Kindness

teach first-grade children and the 100th day of our school year is approaching soon. This is a big math day with lots of activities centered around 100.     Last year I connected the 100th day to kindness and I have just kicked off the same project today with my current class.    We had been talking about Martin Luther King Jr and his dreams of peace and kindness. His birthday was approaching so we talked about acts of kindness we could do at home or in school, then I challenged the children to do 100 random acts of kindness from Doctor King's birthday until our 100th day of school.     The children were so excited to get started. Today was the official day to begin.   We finished the day with 10 acts of kindness recorded. Paren

Red Velvet Cake And Birthday Surprise!

had never made a Red Velvet Cake until recently!    A friend at work said it was her favorite so I told her I would try to make one for her birthday. I made it in a bundt pan and it turned out delicious.    She loved it! She hugged me and said thank you with tears in her eyes! I told her that I loved seeing other people happy and it was my pleasure to be able to make her favorite dessert for her.   And you know what ... it's a win-win situation. I made her day special and I also learned how to make a new dessert! Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting is now going to be one of my favorite cakes to make!

25 Choices That Lead To Happiness

Quarter century markers have a certain weight carried with them; a recognition that much has come before to get to 25 and that there is much to follow before the half century marker arrives.   April 16 marks what would have been or what is, depending on your perspective, Josh’s 25th birthday. Since he left this world at age 15 ½ in October 2002, the number associated with his “missed” birthdays did not have a particular poignancy, other than 16 and 21(these are birthday markers in our culture for everything from driver’s licenses to an ID that allows you to legally consume alcohol and presents you as an “adult”).    Yet, 25 evokes a feeling I can’t quite put my finger on, yet I know it is

The Cupcake Connection.

replied with a somewhat puzzled, "No."   So, I took the cupcake out from behind my back and presented it to him with a smile. "That's good!" I said. "Because Mom made cupcakes today she would like you to have one!"    His smile was a beautiful thing to see and he said, "Well you tell Mom thank you. I don't know how she knew today was my birthday!"    Now it was my turn to smile. I thought I had just done some random nice thing but turns out I was a vessel for the love he deserved to receive on this great day of his birth. Amazing! I am in awe of service!   "I don't know," I told him. "Moms just know these things! Happy birthday, handsome!"     Back in my c

Visiting The Orphanage

y aunt  took me to visit the local orphanage and I spent some time with the children. I couldn't sleep that night for thinking about them.   I have made up my mind to do something for them. I would like to go there every month and spend some time with them.    I went back there on my birthday, distributed sweets and spent some time with them. The last time I had gone there they asked me my name and they talked very well. A month later, on my birthday visit, they remembered my name which really amazed me. They prayed for me that day and I cried like anything. They don't know much about me but their concern made me feel very cared for.  We have many things from children. I am glad I got to give a little back by helping the orphanage.

How To Make Someone's Day

like to anonymously pay the restaurant tabs for strangers who catch my interest.    The last one, for instance, was an elderly lady who came into the restaurant where I was having lunch with my daughter. She was alone and I heard her tell the waitress that it was her birthday and she would like a piece of pie and some coffee.    As I left I told the waitress that I wanted to pay that lady's tab and I asked the waitress to wish the her a very happy birthday but not to tell her who it was.    I try to do this once a month.    When I was a young mother I was at a restaurant with my husband and two little boys and we were surprised to learn that someone had paid our bill because he thought we "looked like a nice family.&qu

Weekend Kindness

and joined a bank note. When I left the shop he was still there so I started a little conversation, he said he was from Glasgow and that he was homeless, my heart went to him, no one should be homeless, we should all have right to shelter in some shape of form. I gave him the chocolate and the cash and when he looked at the bank note, he said "are you sure?" I said "yes, it is your birthday gift" Then he said, you know it is really my birthday, I was born on the 16th of August 1970, and this is the best present I received today. In my heart I knew that he was telling the truth even when it was just a scribble written in a piece of cardboard. There are things one just knows. Now that I am writing this story I realize that my brother was born in 1970, he cou

Cookie As A Middle Name

oday is the birthday of my elderly (82 years old) friend who has Alzheimer's.  I make a point of visiting him at least once a month. I wanted to take him a card and a treat for his birthday. So, off I went to the memory care unit with my coffee, the card, and some chocolate chip cookies.  He always looks so happy to see me (although today was not his best day.)  So, we were sitting there enjoying our treats while I carried on a mostly one-sided conversation. Just then another resident came wandering over and asked, "Would you have some candy for an old guy?"  I chuckled and said I didn't have any candy - but I had cookies!  Then I looked over at one of the staff members to be sure he could have cookies. I don't nee

Flowers For An Unhappy Head

n Saturday it was a co-workers birthday.  She hadn't been coming into work because of a falling out with the boss.  I had a haku (a lei of flowers for the head) made for her and took it to her on her birthday because I wanted her to have something beautiful to help cheer her day.  I had to pick up some other friends who could show me where she lives. We went to her house and gave her the lei and lots of hugs and told her she was loved and missed. She began to cry and smile at the same time. I could tell it really touched her and made her day special - and that made my day!

An Angel In The Check-out Line

t was a busy day at the grocery store and two young ladies were in line behind me with birthday balloons.  They appeared to be stressed and in a hurry so I asked if they wanted to go ahead of me. They were very appreciative.   I asked what the balloons were for and one girl said they were for her nephew's second birthday.  She said it was a difficult day for her with lots of family drama and that her nephew had a twin and something bad happened to the baby at birth.  I noticed she had a small heart shaped tattoo on her neck with the a date in it. The date was exactly two years ago. So, I knew it had to be a significant day.  They were chatting together about their rush to get ready for the party, all the things left to do, and how nobody

30 Acts Of Kindness In 30 Days Challenge!

am currently participating in a "30 acts of kindness in 30 days" challenge which I set myself. Let me explain! A dear friend of mine recently celebrated her 30th birthday. Rather than doing what most women of her age would do, she decided to host a "random acts of kindness" party, inviting her friends to participate in spreading some kindness in the world, and to spend money they'd have spent of a gift for her in acts of kindness to others. At the restaurant, she had a lucky dip draw, and everyone received an act of kindness they had to carry out anonymously. She'd also prepared cards for all those present, where she'd written to each guest personally, saying what they meant to her as a friend, and then passed them around the table for everyone el

36 Acts Of Kindness

few days ago I celebrated my 36th birthday. I decided to do 36 anonymous acts of kindness that day. So I bought 36 flowers and put it on car's windows- with a note that says: "Someone you do not know chose to make you happy. Please give this flower to someone you love. Happy weekend and safe drive". Actually I wanted to print smile cards, but because we are on holidays -the shops were closed. So I handwritten 36 cards. I did it with my little daughter and it really made my birthday- a celebration ! -

Never Too Late To Say I Love You!

could not make it home for my Father's 80th birthday, because of  some health challenges I'm having. Instead, I completed, using a template on Word, and highlighters, a "fun"ky art project, listing 80 things I appreciated and loved about my father. We were never really close...and this act was healing for both of us. Miraculously, it has shifted how we see each other and our relationship.

I Wrote A Birthday ...

wrote a birthday card for a prisoner in prison today. I often do this. Pick someone, anyone I feel drawn to who I feel could benefit from words of love and inspiration and write to them. I use the "writeaprisoner.com" website. Inside this card I included one of Mindys beautiful peace doves with a lovely quote I found by Robert Fulghum I want to share here ... "Peace. Its not something you wish for, Its something you make. Something you do. Something you are. And something you give away" After the quote I then add ... "And you dear *** I gift this peace dove to hang somewhere of your choosing, to remind you always, that peace begins with you" ♥

The Gift Of Joy

oday was our neighbor's birthday. He is a special needs adult who takes delight in the simple things we often take for granted. We took him to IHOP for a birthday breakfast (he L O V E S pancakes) and then on a horse-drawn trolley ride around town. We stopped at a bicycle shop and had him pick out a couple of accessories for his bike (he does not drive). His excitement and joy were a gift to us!

My Kind Friend

buying my textbooks was annoying because I went back and forth between the bookstores because of complications with the textbooks. So my friend had to drive me back and forth in a busy city to these book stores... Then we went to her favorite bakery and although I didn't want anything she bought me a cookie to have anyway! She is so sweet and thoughtful. She also realized it was her friend's birthday who lives in the city we were in, before leaving for our road trip she got her friend a birthday card and made her homemade fudge :). She was so kind throughout the day and I felt so bad for her driving around the city because of my annoying textbooks problems!

Remembering Each Person's Special Day

make a birthday cake for every person in our school, from the janitors to our head of school. We work in an international school in China, and many of us are a very long way from home. There are almost 60 people that work here. Good thing their birthdays are spread out throughout the year! :-)

You Never Know

esterday I took my son shopping with me. He's 18 years old. We went out to buy Thank You cards for people who sent me birthday cards this week. I also bought a garden plaque for a friend who often prays for me. Birthdays are a pretty big deal for me. I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the beginning of last year. Being kind and hopefully inspiring to every and anyone that I can has always been a part of who I am, now I use my time making sure that I convey my appreciation as freely as I possibly can. I give warm hugs to people that I encounter when I go out because you never know when connecting to someone will lift their spirits. For the time that I have, I want to spend it being a light to others. This will be my second birthday inside of my diagnosis. I i

Life's Simple Pleasures

t dusk, I washed my wife's vehicle for her birthday. Neighbors passing by for an evening stroll thought that was strange. I told them it was a gift for Laura. One lady said: "I wish someone would do that for me!" Her husband was with her. LOL! For a change of pace, this morning I made breakfast for my bride of 21 years. Happy Birthday, Sweetheart!!

Birthday Kindness

Birthday Acts Of Kindness

oday's my 35th birthday. Every year I do acts of kindness, one for every year I've been on Earth during this lifetime. This year I prepared 35 cards to pass out to people. They include a positive message, SMILE card, $5, and a request to use the money to do something kind for themselves, others, or the planet. I'll hand them out with a friend tonight. Fun! :)

I Arrived On His Birthday In Colombia

were leaving at sunrise. Placing my sleeping bag on the floor, I realized I was already there, kids were going to come anytime soon and I was not ready yet. They got there an hour later. I don't understand why, from so many children, I could not stop looking at one in particular. So I approached him. I saw that he was dirty and his clothes were old. The first thing he told me was that his birthday was that very same day. So I told him to wait for me, meanwhile, I got him a present. I went inside and picked up a plastic ball that was lying in a corner. When I got back, I told him to close his eyes, and from the moment he opened them, a wide smile spread across his face and did not fade. Just for one plastic ball lying in a corner. I realized he was so happy with so littl

Touched By A Peace Dove

ating out yesterday, the wait staff started singing happy birthday to a gal at the table near ours, as they brought her a piece of cake with a candle burning. We all joined in, and after, I handed her a peace dove (and shared about  fellow KindSpring member Mindy. and her peace dove mission). She gifted me with a beautiful smile and appreciation in return. Gave one to her friend as well, and on their way out they both stopped at our table to say thank you again. I wished her the best birthday year ever and felt that connection you share when kindness passes between you while looking in each others' eyes. ❤️ Grateful for the ease of connection Mindy's doves enable. Thank you, Mindy, for adding so much kindness to our world. ❤️ðŸŒ

Manifesting Love 💗

really liked and who liked me too. I called to my sister Berni's house today and as I was leaving she gave me this gift. She said it's for Tuesday week. I was confused, it's a gift for Valentine's Day lol! ! She's never done this before in her life. Such a beautiful sister and I just love her and Philip so much. They are unbelievably good to me. I'll put this story in the Birthday book I'm making for her Birthday just to make her smile. Berni and her husband Philip met the criteria of my manifestation, guess I should have been a bit more specific though, I wanted it to be from a male suitor. Right ..... back to the drawing board .... there's still time for me to be more specific and for the Universe to deliver. ... 💗
