Nanny's Birthday Lunch
ast weekend, a few of us drove to Oklahoma to see my husband's mother, who is now in a nursing home. We wanted to take her out to lunch to celebrate her 88th birthday. We decided to go to an all you can eat buffet. Now when I said there was a few of us, I should have mentioned 10 people in all. When you have over 50 members in your family, 10 is a few to us but not to the waitress at the buffet. The waitress began clearing off a couple of tables and moved the tables together. Then she started running around the room to gather up enough chairs so we were all able to sit together. It was on a Sunday, and the peak time for lunch. The place was packed. You had to get a clean plate for salad, entries and desert. I

Birthday Celebrations
had my 25th birthday last week. I am tired of drunken debaucheries :) so 8 of us got together and decided to do something nice for the people who pick up the phone when we call the college shuttle. It is because of them that we are able to go from one place to another in this freezing cold. We made posters saying - "Thank you for all you do", "Your help is appreciated!" and others. We bought coffee, cakes, cookies, and chocolates and decided to take it to the shutte headquarters. It was a blast -- haven't seen sooo many unexpected smiles in a looooonggggg time! It was indeed the best birthday ever :-)

My Nurse's Special Birthday Gift
ast month it was my nurse's birthday. She has been caring for me since August 2006. Through the months, we have built an amazing bond. She has been there for me, and has helped me over so many hurdles its unbelievable. She's my rock in every way. I wanted to do something special for her birthday, to show her how much she means to me. Being confined to my bed, I can't go out shopping for a gift. So I was left to use my imagination and the materials in my room. But I was determined to make an unforgettable gift. I found an old shoe box, and got a bunch of my old girlie magazines, and spent 4 days cutting and pasting carefully selected items onto the box, creating an intricate collage. Each piece reflected in some way or another, our friendship. To finish it off, I put a

Birthday Smiles
oday is my birthday and someone came to my house and decorated my table with a table cloth, birthday plates, supper and a cake. They left a smile card behind! What a blessing to come home to! My son was here but he is not letting it be known who is responsible for the surprise! What a blessing!

21 Ways To Celebrate Life
After Nancy Rothstein's son, Josh, passed away unexpectedly, she was seeking a way to offer a tribute for family and friends to honor his birthday. With each passing birthday, she adds one more item to the list. Last April 16 would've been Josh's 21st birthday, and true to her tradition, Nancy shared these 21 ways to celebrate life: Smile. Smiling makes you and those around you feel good. If you don’t feel good, a smile can trick your brain into feeling better. Eat ice cream. Run on the beach. If you can’t physically do this, use your imagination. Call someone who is ill or lonely. Listen to their story. Take the time. Tell them your story, if they ask. Listen to music

My Daughter's 19th Birthday With A Twist
or my daughter's 19th birthday in December, we bought her tickets to go and see Linkin Park, as they were playing in our city in the UK. We didn't really have the money but we knew how much this band meant to her, and she'd seen them years earlier with her Dad. The night before she was like a kid at Christmas, all pink cheeked, shiny eyed and giddy with aniticipation. Every so often she got up and came to sit with us, because she couldn't sleep. On the night of the concert it was good to see her so happy and excited, as she and her boyfriend set off. Needless to say when they returned after midnight , with t-shirts, a programme and lots of video and pictures of the band, listening to her gushing about how fantastic they had been, we knew that the m

Learning Generosity At A Young Age
nbsp; On about her 7th or 8th birthday, my daughter said that she wanted to have her friends do a scavenger hunt/food collection as part of her birthday party. She wanted to give the food to a food pantry to feed homeless and hungry people. So, during the party the little girls went out in our neighborhood on their mission and came back with bags and bags of food that we took to our local food pantry. I remember being so proud of her for being generous, kind and caring. Fast forward to now. My daughter recently turned 21. She is a college student attending university in Tennessee. After church each Sunday she and her boyfriend volunteer with their church to provide meals for homeless people in a park near the church. Recently they also start

Loving Kindness Is Twice Blessed
felt gloomy the other day. The weather had been dark and rainy, and I just didn’t feel so positive. It happens to us all, I guess. As I was sitting at my desk, I remembered it was the birthday of a dear long-time friend—a single, middle-aged woman who has dedicated the past 30 years to nursing and loves her work. Knowing that she doesn’t have family in town, I decided to give her a call. Sure enough, she was scheduled to work late into the evening, and wouldn’t have much of a birthday this year. As always, though, she sounded cheerful and was happy I called. After I hung up, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she would really appreciate a little attention on her special day. Still feeling a little gloomy myself, I tried to put it out of my mi

Flowers For A Stranger In The Hospital
nbsp; On my birthday this year, I decided to do something very different. I decided to do something for someone. I have been blessed with so much and I wanted to reach out and be a blessing to someone. So, that afternoon, I went to my local grocery store, bought a bouquet of flowers and went down the street to the new hospital. I had no idea who I was going to present the flowers to, but I would find someone who needed to be cheered up. I went up to the 4th floor, asked the nurses at the station, who thought it odd that I didn't have anyone in particular that I was there to see. Still, they gave me the room number of an elderly lady who they said, "could use some cheering up." I proceeded to the

Photos Lead To Birthday Sharing
in a picture with his wife. So we got our picture taken with her. A little time later we saw the couple again, this time we were with our family. I ran up and offered to take their picture. They looked at us and saw our family. The husband said, " Would you like to share a cake and some drink with my wife and I?" We said "Yes," and they came back with a huge birthday cake. It turned out they were from Bangladesh and the woman could speak limited English and had no family with whom to share her birthday. It turned out one small act of kidness returned another act.

Bringing Our Family Together For A Special 60th
ecently I decided to plan a surprise 60th birthday party for my mother. I felt bad that my brother would not be there since he is in Texas and it would be too difficult for him to get home for a weekend. He was fine with it though and just said he wished he could be there. My uncle called and said that he wanted to bring my mother something for her birthday. He said he was her brother and didn't care that the invite said no gifts. He decided that what my mother would like most is to have her whole family togehter. So he decided to fly my brother and his girlfriend home for Easter this year. My mother has not received this gift since the party is this weekend but I know she is going to be super excited about it as I am. We didn't think

Extra Special Birthday Kindness For A Deserving Friend
oday was my friend's birthday. My friend is such a kind and sincere person and he had recently told me about how when he was growing up his parents often forgot his birthday and it just silently passed without candles or hats or parties. So this year, I decided to make it a special day for him. I cleaned up his house, including taking out what seemed like weeks of piled up trash. I then decorated it with candles and flower arrangements. I bought some cupcakes which I have seen him drool over but never buy because of his bank balance and cooked him dinner and called some friends. Finally, I made a banner which read "Thanks for sharing your wisdom, humor, kindness, and compassion!". This was my chance to make him happy a

Birthday Smiles For My Daughter
oday is my daughter's 24th Birthday. I won't see her until later in the day, so I went to her classroom where she teaches late last night and set up helium balloons and left cookies for her to share with her students. I know it'll make her smile when she arrives this morning :) ...and they say ... how you act on your birthday will be how you'll be all year long... so I think I've got her off to a good start!

My Children Lift A Heavy Heart
wrote to my brother with cancer, my sister with a sick husband, and an elderly friend living in a nursing center. I was so proud of them for being so thoughtful! Then, my son went out of the room and I heard a lot of whispering between my daughter and him. Well, my sister was over and had mentioned that a very close friend of hers (an elderly lady battling breast cancer) was having a birthday. Knowing that she loves angels, he and my daughter found a beautiful picture of an angel online, they printed it out, and he made her a gorgeous birthday card to cheer her day. The next day she called him and told him that her day had started out very tough. Then, when she received his card, it completely changed her entire day! Sh

Happy Birthday, Stranger
I always love getting mail; real mail that’s delivered to my door, not to my computer. My birthday is one of the few times a year that I actually receive mail other than bills or advertisements. So, for my birthday last weekend I decided that I would share that joy with a total stranger. I purchased the brightest, happiest card I could find, ending up with a card with a lot of bright colors and a ridiculous amount of smiley faces! I wrote an inspiring message inside and posted it. Hopefully it brought a smile to someone’s face to have such a happy card in their mail instead of just bills!

A Chocolate-Chip Birthday Cake
I work in a small department store. I decided to celebrate my fellow employees birthdays - if they wanted to be remembered! So, I got them to write down the dates and I try to make sure each one feels special on their special day. I was going to be away for Renaldo's birthday so I told him I could have someone pick up donuts or a treat on his real birthday or I could make him a chocolate cake when I returned to work. He opted for my home-made chocolate cake! So, today I brought in a yummy rich chocolate chip cake. It made his day and he couldn't thank me enough. Home-made goodies are such a nice treat!

Birthday Gift Of A Compliment
politely told us that we could leave our feedback about today's service through a phone survey, which we'd receive soon. I asked him whether there was another way to leave feedback because I am not very good at attending phone calls. He replied that the phone call would be the only way. Before leaving, I quickly registered the name of the sales manager in my mind. The next day was my birthday. I really wanted to do something special for it (like everyone else obviously :)). I hadn't received any survey calls yet. So, I started exploring options on the cell phone company's website to leave compliments or comments. Failing to find any, I started a chat session with the online customer representative. I told her my situation and asked her what the best way

Adventures In Babysitting
offered to watch a friend's children so she and her husband could go out to watch a movie. She was delighted with the offer - but didn't get around to fixing a day. So, finally, I picked a date and asked her if she was free. She was really excited and looking forward to her night out. On the day of the babysitting her husband e-mailed me and told me it was her birthday! I hadn't known that! He told me he would bring over a cake after the movie, when they came to pick up the kids. The kids had a great time (and so did we!) We made cookies together, played games, and so on. Then, when their parents came back we had a surprise birthday party with cake and ice cream and sparkling juice. We made music together and it was ver

The Top 10 Kindness Stories Of 2013
after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought that we could, so she dictated these words... It Was All My Choice Yesterday was my 51st birthday. While some may wonder why I would write about me, it is because I made a choice. I have never been a big fan of my birthday. Hurts from the past and just not enjoying the "wisdoming" (instead of aging) process up to now, has usually left me either quiet about my birthday or just plain grumpy about it. But yesterday, when I woke up, m

her sister “get over here! Birthday Donations
messaged my Kenyan friend to wish him a 'Happy Birthday!'. He told me that instead of spending money on a party, he chose to visit a juvenile facility and spend the money on donations. He donated personal items like toilet tissue and soap which are not provided by the state. What a tremendous way to spend a birthday!

A Different Birthday Bash
e had an amazing birthday party today. Our friend who is in her early 60's has health issues and we see her fighting each day. Heavily diabetic she lost her vision, her leg was amputated and the heavy antibiotics have damaged her kidneys beyond repair so she is on dialysis 3 days a week. In her good days she has been a dancer, singer and a happy lady. After she lost her vision and her ailments life came to a stand still. These days she has become a recluse. It was her birthday and few of her friends decided to gift her some happy moments. Ten of them gathered together with different types of foods prepared for her, somebody ferried her to her friends house where the party was to take place. She was so overwhelmed by all the love showered on her that tears of j

A Gift Of Love For Berni 2017
I love my sister Berni. She is so good to me. It's her birthday tomorrow and I wanted to gift her something special. She and her family often feature in my KindSpring posts so I made a book of some of my stories. There are 150 pages in it, including the comments to each post. I put the KindSpring logo in the header area of each page and when the book was complete, I brought it to be professionally bound. I've also included a post where I told you I was preparing a book for her birthday and asked you to wish her a happy birthday. So you're in it too!!! The spine has the words A gift of love to Berni 2017. I included a Dedication page to her and at the very back I included a large photo of her lovingly holding one of my father's caps at her son'

A New Birthday Tradition Started A Cycle Of Kindness
spent a few hours today with my younger granddaughter, Anna, in preparation of her upcoming fourth birthday. One of our missions for the day was to work together to do four acts of kindness. We watched this video together: http://www.karmatube.org/videos.php?id=7641. I saw the emotion on her face change as the feelings of the main character changed. I knew she "got it." We talked about being kind to others, I explained our "project" and set off to do some shopping. Anna loves babies and always wants to walk through the "baby aisles." She found a little outfit that she wanted to get. I told her I knew a baby it would fit and showed her a picture of her. Anna's face lit up. We purchased the outfit (on sale!) and went home to make a card to s

A Very Simple Celebration
very simple celebration! I celebrated my birthday with a tea shop's worker and his wife. Both of them work at the tea stall. They don't have any children. I just sat with them and asked them, what would they like to eat? They smiled and didn't ask for anything. They told me "just spend some time with us." After half hour, I again asked them to eat something, but they didn't ask for anything. When I forced them and said I want to give you a party, his wife smiled and said, "just bring an apple." I was surprised and asked "an apple, why only an apple? I can bring ten pieces." She replied very politely, "please bring only an apple." I went to the market and bought an apple and gave it to her. She divided it in three part

My Mom's Birthday
y mom's birthday is coming up and I've been asking her for a while what she wants. Every time I've asked, she said the same things, that she's got everything she needs, she's got her 5 kids and she's got her health. So I've decided to make her a "photo book". It is what it is: a book of photos, with whatever storyline you want to make. So I've decided I'd do one called "50 Things I Love about My Mom" (I picked 50 as that's what she's about to turn). I've been asking my siblings what they love about our mom, and I've generated quite the list. I've also found accompanying photos from our albums to go along with it. I can't wait to get it printed. Here's one from my little sister: "She ba

Cookies For The Local DJ
ne of the things I did in April was to make a batch of cookies for my local radio DJ's. A couple weeks ago one of them had a birthday so I called to wish her a happy birthday. The other DJ told me that the birthday-DJ hadn't realized that I had delivered only one plate of the goodies and took them ALL home accidentally. I told him I'd make him another batch and deliver them to his home since he lives 2 minutes walking distance from my house. Yesterday I surprised him leaving them for him and his wife. #AprilRAOK

Birthday Gift
oday I gave a surprise visit to my music teacher at his house for his birthday. And I gave him a bouquet of flowers, a card, and a pothos plant (money plant). But the treat that I received was beyond my expectations! His wife and he shared a full lunch with me of a delicious sweet dish, curry, and vegetables alongside watermelon juice. They even packed food for me for my family along with figs from their tree. I feel so grateful for their company as they are very peaceful, simple, and kind people to be with. I started to feel like it was my birthday. :)

Birthday Care Day
hen we go on walks my husband often talks about the litter he sees on the sidewalk. So on his birthday, he decided to do some clean-up. I took a picker and he held a big trash bag. Together we did litter pickup on the sidewalk near the high school. I was surprised that the bag filled up so quickly and we dumped it in the roadside trash bin and repeated the process two more times. It gave a sense of satisfaction to know that we did what we could for our Mother Earth. We thought of doing this on a regular basis; maybe once a month. Afterward, we had a nice cup of tea and enjoyed his cake. :) Every day after waking up is a birthday in some sense, and it would be so nice to practice starting with a fresh beginning and a kinder heart every day. :)

For The Footpath Children ...
or The Footpath Children ❤️ Kindness with Divine sister's Birthday celebration in mind. Recently bought school supplies, such as uniforms and slippers and gave them to the children, most of whom live on the footpath. I thought most of the students were done needing school supplies, but fortunately I was blessed with new contacts. So, I shopped for more items as shown in the image. Replaced short zippers with long ones for girl's uniforms. Sewed belts and repaired some. Sorted according to student's name for easier giving. I began giving supplies to celebrate my divine sister's birthday on September 15th, along with cookie packets, quote cards, birthday quote cards, bookmarks, and mindyjourney’s Dove message - with quotes and dov
